Directed By:
Owen Hurley

Starring:
Tim Curry

Not Rated
Genre: Family Fantasy
Format Used: Netflix DVD
Contains: Mild Violence

THE PLOT:

When Kelly has trouble practicing her ballet steps Barbie tells her the story of another girl, who goes on a grand adventure that starts out as a Christmas Present of a Nutcracker, but this Nutcracker was a human transformed into a living nutcracker by an evil Mouse with magical powers.

Now Barbie joins the Nutcracker to find the Sugar Plum Fairy to undo the spell and stop the Mouse King once and for all.

ZEDD'S OPINION:

Now I know this is based on an old ballet but that's really no excuse for all the ballet in this movie. I've seen two movies based on the opera Faust, but neither had singing in it. But the animation and the motion capture was cool, there is something for males to enjoy in this while the women watch all the ballet. But it is a good fantasy story with cool characters and well written. 9 STARS.

VOLTRON'S OPINION:

I agree that the ballet hurt the story, it caused the story to lag in several places it didn't need to lag and since it's Barbie it's marketed mainly for girls, so I wouldn't recommend this if you don't have any girls in your house. 8 STARS.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE (+ HITS):

+ STORY (The classic story works.)
+ CAST (The cast does a great job.)
+ ANIMATION (There is some great animation.)
+ MOTION CAPTURE (There is some interesting motion capture.)

ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE (- MISSES):

- BALLET (Just because it was based on a ballet doesn't mean you have to have ballet in your movie.)

...AND FIANLLY...

- GIRL BASED (Barbie is a well known girl toy, so except for the monsters in it, I doubt boys will enjoy it too much.)
